From antiquity to the modern age, silver has played an uninterrupted role in the economic and social life of Greece. Art forms with an important tradition and long evolution, Greek silvercraft and gold jewelry-making had become leading craft industries by the Byzantine era and into the period of Turkish rule. Museum’s silverware collection is one of the finest of its kind. It concludes objects indented for ecclesiastical and secular use such as men’s accessories and various ornaments of male and female costumes. The best known silver workshops were set at the mountain villages Syrrako and Kalarites of Pindos range, at Stemnitsa in Peloponnese, at Saframpolis in Asia Minor, at Constantinople, Epirus, Thrace, Ionian Islands, Cyprus.
